Holiday woes?

So I went to the mall last night to do some last minute Hanukkah shopping. For the first time in my memory, the mall isn't open until 10 pm in the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year's, and it was empty. I mean, we immediately got a parking place in the very front.

You'd think all the slow business would translate to lower prices, wouldn't you? But apparently not. I'm very thankful that we put away $200 a month each year for the holidays. Then we pull it out on Thanksgiving weekend to shop. Otherwise, we'd probably be in as big a predicament as lots of other folks.

How about you? Are your malls as empty as mine? And are you getting better deals this year?

  1. Oooh, that's not good, all those empty malls. But I'm impressed you put 200 a month away. Wow, you all are going to get some great presents!

  2. Wow! $200 a month? Go you! We don't keep track per se - but we do live "below our means" and live frugally enough during the year that we can splurge a bit over Christmas. Of course this year the splurging as been on things like dental bills and car repairs. Blergh!

I'm done with my shopping, and when I was out last week I noticed there were people out and about - but not nuts like it usually is. I'm wondering if a lot people did their shopping on Black Friday? Or more likely, everyone's really tightening the belt.....

  3. Went shopping on Wednesday evening, from 6 to 9pm and the malls (it's like 4 malls connected underground) in downtown are still all very crowded. However, I agree with you, things are not cheap.

  4. WTG with the $200 a month. That's a really good idea.

I was at the mall yesterday - teen daughter needed to go to the Anime store to get gifts for friends. I refused to go in and instead stayed in the car with my book. LOL I'm not a mall person and avoid them whenever possible. It was very crowded and everyone seemed to be in a hurry.

Went to Target last night after the boys went to bed and it was wonderful. No crowds, no lines. That's when I usually shop, late at night or online. Can't stand the crowds. :)
