NSFW photos... thoughts, cheese, and whine

So, I usually check my blogs at work. I use Google Chrome's Incognito window, just to be on the safe side, but there are still files that make it through to my temp folder. And thus, available to TPTB (the powers that be) at work. Now, I had to sign a contract for TPTB that I wouldn't download any sort of inappropriate material at work. This would include NSFW photos and cookies.

I love to look at beautiful naked men as much as the next person, and there are some sites I just don't look at while at work, even in my GReader, because I know that there will be NSFW cookies (waving to Kris). I always view these posts at home or on my phone.

Lately, I've noticed that a completely unrelated post will have totally inappropriate pictures in it. And by that, I mean looking at the post title doesn't give me any clue whatsoever that there might be NSFW pics in it. Like a random "about my life" post. There were 5 or 6 in my GReader this afternoon alone. And NSFW doesn't just include naked people; it also includes a lot of other stuff such as hands down pants, m/m kissing, etc. And even some book covers!

So, I'm going to have to stop bloghopping at work (which I'm not supposed to be doing anyway). Which means I become totally scarce around blogland since I spend approx 11-12 hrs each day at work. Add in commute time, a little family time, a little food time, and I'm down to about 2 or 3 waking hours to sit online. And I'd rather be reading.

So here's my question: Is it really such an inconvenience to note in your post title something to the effect of (NSFW pics included)? I realize it's a pain in the ass, but I can't be the only person with this problem. I enjoy looking at pretty cookies as much as the next girl, but not enough to get fired.

Anyone else notice this trend? Of cookies included when there is nothing in the post to warrant it? And of no notice they're there?

I know I sound like a prude, and I am soooo not, but with the limited time I have, I want to get the most out of my bloghopping.

Thoughts?

  1. I'll do you one better - I've stopped following blogs because of NSFW photos. Period. I love beautiful men as much as the next girl - but the only time I like to look at them nekkid is when they're in my bed....with me. Otherwise? Looking at nekkid guys online just doesn't do it for me. And since my Google Reader also houses RSS feeds for work-related librarian blogs? Uh, which means I'm looking at my GR while I'm at work - If your site is nothing but nekkid man-titty, I'm deleting you.

    C'est la vie.

Also, this could just be me - but I've gotten so use to "click away! click away!" when seeing nekkid menz I don't even READ the blog content. There could be lots of good stuff I'm missing out there just because I'm a prude....and I'll never know.....

  2. I'm sitting here still trying to figure out what NSFW stands for, but I think I figured out what you're talking about anyway. LOL.

I blog hop almost exclusively from home, and even I am prepared to click away asap depending on the blog. Unfortunately, like Wendy, I often click away and am deterred from returning to actually read the blog content if the men photos are too frequent and prevalent at a particular blog.

  3. Christine, NSFW = Not Safe for Work.

And I agree w/you both. I click away fast, like just the glimpse won't register that I visited *snort*.

And Wendy, I also have a ton of blogs I read for work, so I open everything in my GReader as well.

  4. LOL, I was trying to figure out what NSFW stood for too :P

Well, my blog is always safe!! :D I agree with all of you. Pictures of naked men don't really interest me and I tend to skip those posts/blogs.

  5. I seldom check blogs at work because the security is a bit tight -- those blogs I usually visited before were getting blocked from the network one by one.

But I think I haven't really came across much of those nekkid men pictures from blogs I've often visited. Where are they? LOL

  6. This is funny, b/c I waited until I got home to read this after I saw the title of your post in my Google Reader at work. I figured it was better to be safer than sorry. IRONY!? I used to read The Superficial at work through my GR until it got to be too nasty and I finally gave it up. (Now I'll never know what Lindsay/Britney are up to.)

  7. Since there's probably quite a few people doing at least some bloghopping from work, I think it should be common courtesy to put the NSFW on the post title.

And some blogs it's not just the posts but the sidebars that could be embarrassing if someone(boss) caught you looking.

  8. I've also stopped following some blogs because of the NSFW pictures. I'm a normal, red-blooded woman and I like the look of a well-formed male torso as much as the next girl. But why would I want to see a near-endless parade of them - especially when the images are at best tangentially related to the subject matter?

For that matter, why would I want to see a parade of them, period? Yes, they're (usually) aesthetically pleasing, but there's some really unpleasant objectification going on sometimes - and often from people who'd be irritated at a man plastering pictures of girls in their underwear all over the place.

And I REALLY do not want to look at pictures of anyone, regardless of gender, engaging in major PDA while I'm catching up on feeds over breakfast. Or at any other time for that matter.

However, if people really have to include these things, then yes, Lori, I'm with you: NSFW warnings, please.

[Ahem. Sorry. Rant over. As you were, everyone. *Gets off soapbox and back to morning coffee*.]

Natalie: most of the blogs I follow are book blogs, and the ones with the *cough* interesting *cough* pictures have been on book blogs devoted to romance novels; I think the blogs I stopped following were by romance authors. I also follow some where the bloggers are scrupulous about including NSFW warnings, and I really appreciate that.

  9. I've had to cut my blog hopping at work way down - in fact down so much I don't anymore. It's not so much the NSFW blogs, but more because someone noticed me doing it a while ago and ratted me out. I even rarely check my email even anymore *sigh*.
And while the inner prurient in me likes pics of scantily clad guys, overall, I'm not a fan of pics on romance blogs.

  10. I read this post and it made me sooo paranoid about bloghopping through google reader while at work. I only look at a few blogs at work anyway, but I agree, a little notice would be nice, just in case.

  11. Erm, whoopsie. Sorry, Lori! :)

When a pic is particularly naughty I try to remember to put nsfw in the title otherwise I use 'cookies' (my word for the pretties), but you're absolutely right. Will try to do nsfw from now on. Pinky swear.

  12. Laughing Angie - I thought about that as I hit the Send button. But better safe than sorry :)

Leslie, you're right! Some of those sidebars are pretty racy!

Didn't mean to make you scared to bloghop, Ames... just my own little whine.

Kris, this wasn't actually aimed at you; I know that I can't view your blog at work, so I check it on my phone (which may be the reason I so seldom comment *g*). But for someone new to your blog, it might be helpful to know that the posts include NSFW pics.

  13. *sigh* you're talking about me aren't you? lol

Ok - I'll try to be more conscientious and put NSFW in the title. :) Just for you baby!

  14. I couldn't agree more. I don't have to worry about getting fired for NSFW content, but I just don't like looking at it. Not without some warning, anyway.

I'm seriously freaked out about some of the covers we've had on our blog recently. Some of those EC covers scare me.
